The living wage is the hourly amount that each of two working parents with two young children must earn to meet their basic expenses (including rent, child care, food and transportation) once government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies are taken into account. It is a barebones budget that does not include debt repayment or savings for future plans.
At Living Wage for Families BC, we work with partners to calculate living wage rates for communities across the province and we certify employers that pay a living wage to their staff and contractors. Finally, we advocate for complementary government policies that help families make ends meet. There are nearly 400 employers across BC who have stepped up and are paying their staff and contractors a living wage.
