Dee Ingram Memorial Fund

Doreen Ingram (nee Dowd), or Dee to her friends and family, was born December 14, 1931, in Montreal. After moving to Vancouver to work in the law library at UBC in 1961, she met her husband, Reg and settled into a house with a good-sized yard where she both raised a family and a grew a garden graced with many plants from her time volunteering at both VanDusen Botanical Garden in the 1970s and 80s and later in life at the UBC Botanical Gardens.

A longtime FOG, or Friend of the Garden, at the UBC Botanical Gardens, Dee cherished her time volunteering there and helped run the bookshop at the Shop in the Garden using her librarian skills and knowledge. Through gardening and her time volunteering, Dee learned about native plants and developed a keen interest in environmental issues, which she supported through various charities over the decades.

Pre-deceased by her husband Reg in 1989, Dee died peacefully in January 2023 at age 91 having lived independently until just a week before being hospitalized. Her independence was a defining feature of her life. Dee will be remembered by her friends and family for her warmth, fiery intellect, fierce loyalty, and love of a good laugh. She leaves behind two sons, Neil and John, and a favourite daughter-in-law, Joni (also an avid gardener with whom Dee would query numerous plants and flowers). She also leaves behind nieces and nephews Dave (and husband Rob), Julia, Tim, and Mary.

The Dee Ingram Memorial Fund supports two of her favourite environmental organizations and causes – the Nature Trust of BC and Ecojustice Canada. Ecojustice is Canada’s largest environmental law charity who support environmental justice and protections from coast-to-coast. The Nature Trust of BC is dedicated to conserving BC’s biodiversity through securement, restoration and management of ecologically significant lands.
